Whole vs universal life insurance

Traditional whole life generally uses a set premium schedule with stated guarantees. Universal life offers more flexibility, but its funding and charges need attention. For either policy, distinguish what the contract promises from an illustration that depends on future assumptions.

Two pillars representing different permanent policy structures

Start with the guaranteed column

A permanent policy illustration can contain both guaranteed and non-guaranteed values. In traditional whole life, participating dividends are not guaranteed. In universal life, interest crediting and insurance charges can affect how long the policy lasts. New York DFS: Life insurance information describes these structures and their differences.

Do not treat a projected account value as money the insurer has promised. Ask the agent to identify each assumption and show what happens under the contractual guarantees.

Flexibility needs a maintenance plan

Universal life may allow changes in premiums or benefits within the contract. Paying a planned premium is not always enough to maintain coverage indefinitely. The Texas Department of Insurance: Life insurance guide explains how policy costs and account value can affect coverage. A no-lapse guarantee, if offered, has its own requirements.

Use an annual statement review to answer three questions: Is the coverage still in force? What payment is required now? How long is it projected to remain in force under the current assumptions? Request an updated in-force illustration when needed.

Put two proposals side by side

Create two columns on paper. For each proposal, record the death benefit, premium schedule, guaranteed values, non-guaranteed values, surrender charges and loan terms. Leave a box blank when the proposal does not answer it; ask before filling it in.

Do not compare only a future cash-value figure. Your notes should also explain what you would lose by surrendering early and what ongoing attention the policy needs. For a complex permanent policy, take the illustration to a licensed professional who can explain its risks in the context of your own finances.
