A short annual life insurance review

Review whether your coverage still fits your responsibilities, your beneficiaries are current and your payments are keeping the policy active. A yearly calendar reminder is a practical starting point; a major family, work or financial change is a reason to check sooner.

Review before replacing

NAIC: Reviewing life insurance needs encourages checking current coverage and needs. A review is not automatically a reason to buy more or switch insurers. First collect the policy, latest statement and current beneficiary designation. Write down what has changed since your last check.

Work through four questions:

  • Who depends on my income or unpaid care now?
  • Does the amount and duration of coverage still match that need?
  • Are the people named on the policy still the intended beneficiaries?
  • Are payment details current, and is coverage confirmed active?

Make one useful record

Keep a dated note of the insurer’s contact details, the policy location and questions that need a reply. Do not copy medical information or full identification numbers into an unprotected calendar entry.

Insurance Information Institute: Steps for buying life insurance stresses understanding the policy and reviewing the documents. For permanent insurance, ask for an explanation of the current statement and any updated illustration. For term coverage, note the end of the guaranteed premium period and any conversion deadline.

If replacement is being considered, ask a licensed agent to compare the existing and proposed contracts, including costs and conditions. Confirm the new policy is actually in force before relying on it. Keep the review focused on your household’s needs, not on a sales deadline.
