Tip / Policy types
Read a life policy illustration
Separate guaranteed figures from values that depend on assumptions, and ask which payments or conditions are required to keep the policy in force. Keep the illustration with the actual policy documents. A projected value is not a promise of performance, and similar policy names do not establish that their costs or guarantees are the same.
Label the columns
Ask the insurer or agent to identify the guaranteed and nonguaranteed parts of the illustration. Note the assumptions beside the figures rather than copying only the most attractive number. Find the relevant policy wording for any feature you do not understand. Texas insurance guidance distinguishes policy types and warns readers to understand how premiums and values can change.
Check the conditions
Ask what payments, charges or other conditions support the illustrated outcome. Record what happens if an assumption differs and where the answer appears in the policy. Do not treat the illustration as a substitute for the contract or a personal recommendation. Your needs, ability to pay and existing coverage matter alongside the presentation of future values.
Retain the comparison
Keep each illustration dated and tied to the exact product and version. Save written explanations with it so a later review can identify which assumptions were discussed. Compare like periods and conditions before drawing a conclusion. Ask a licensed insurance professional or other qualified adviser about decisions with long-term consequences, especially when replacing an existing policy or relying on a projected value.
A record you can revisit
Keep the original document, the date you checked it and the question you asked together. Distinguish the provider’s written answer from your own interpretation. If a term is still unclear, leave it marked as unresolved rather than filling the gap with an assumption. Recheck the relevant documents before acting on an old note.
